Ute Valley Park

Wasn’t it a lovely morning today?

Hike 6

This shot was taken from my phone at one of the high points of a trail in Ute Valley Park. Living on the Northwest side, it’s right in my own backyard, and I’ve promised myself to get out there and hike in it at least one morning every week. The outside loop takes me about 40 minutes — or 50 minutes total from my front door, round trip — with a run/walk combination. It would naturally be a little longer just walking, but still a short enough work out to squeeze in.

If anyone nearby wants to join me or wants to know more about the park, leave a comment and I’ll send you my information.

Trista’s “Trail Mix”

Today, Jane and I decided to take on another hike from Trista’s Trail Mix. After all, we tried one in Cheyenne Canyon on Wednesday and it was pretty easy and we really enjoyed the scenery. So today, we headed up to Waldo Canyon with Trista’s instructions, and our water bottles, in hand. Though neither one of us had ever been on this trail, we were feeling pretty confident in our ability to follow instructions and make the most out of the hike. Little did we know what the day would bring…

Trista’s Trail Mix said “go to the top” of Waldo Canyon (40 minutes) then turn around and come back. Sounds easy, right? Off we go, hiking up higher and higher, breathing harder and harder, but there never seems to be a “TOP”! So, we keep on going…eventually coming to Waldo’s Loop Trail. Well, we still don’t seem to be at the top, and neither of us wore a watch, so we continue hiking up the Loop. Did I mention that the loop itself is 3.1 miles? But, confident in Trista’s instructions, we continue climbing…and find ourselves in one of the most beautiful and peaceful places we’ve ever been! Incredible vistas, quiet broken only by the sounds of the trees and the birds, a feeling of being one with mother nature, this was a trail hike not to be missed! So we stopped worrying about where we went wrong and just continued on, soaking up the peace and beauty and enjoying every moment of our time in Waldo Canyon.

2 1/2 hours later, we arrived back at the parking lot. We find a huge sign which shows us the trail and tells us that we climbed 2100 feet in elevation and traveled over 6.2 miles! Somehow, we don’t think that Trista planned that for us today…but WOW, are we glad we did it! Now, what trail shall we tackle Sunday??
